José María Velasco Román
Our winemaker studied enology at the “Escuela y Museo de la Vid y el Vino de Madrid” (School and Museum of the Vine and Wine of Madrid).
José María developed his professional career at Bodegas Mauro, learning and working closely with the family of Mariano García both in their winery in Tudela de Duero (Mauro) and inVillaEster (San Román).
He began his career as an independent winemaker founding Bodegas Réquiem, while at the same time advising different wineries in the D.O. Cigales, D.O. Ribera del Duero and the recently born P.O.D. Valtiendas.
Ten years later, after the sale of Bodegas Requiem, he participated in the launching of Bodegas Sire together with a good friend, and at the same time was responsible for the oenological management of an important winery in Serbia.
After five years of hard work, life took José María to France to work as an oenologist in a winery in Puyloubier, a few kilometers from Aix-en-Provenze.
Upon his return, he took up winemaking consulting in several wineries of the D.O. Ribera de Duero and the PDO. Valtiendas, surveillance of vineyards in Ribera del Duero, and advised two top restaurants owned by good friends in Madrid on the selection of wines.
Living between Madrid and Ribera del Duero is when José María met the Chairman of Bodegas el Hacedor, who shared with José María the project and its ambitious goals. José María did not hesitate to join the project and they began, together with other professionals, to build Bodegas El Hacedor, of which José María is a fundamental pillar.
D. O. RIBERA DEL DUERO
The Ribera del Duero denomination, created in 1982, stretches along a 115-kilometer-long strip of the Duero River basin, which includes municipalities in the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia.
Bodegas El Hacedor has, in the Ribera del Duero D.O., a winemaking winery and another winery for winemaking and aging, which will be completed in 2023/24.
Our winery in Quintanilla de Arriba (Valladolid) is located in the epicenter of the so-called “golden mile” of the Ribera del Duero DO.
The “golden mile” extends along the 25 kilometers that separate the villages of Quintanilla de Onésimo, Pesquera de Duero and Peñafiel, where the best known and most renowned wineries of this Denomination of Origin are located.
